Recently, judges in the national court system have declared state Marriage Amendments to be in disagreement with the U.S. Constitution; because those Amendments declare marriage to be between a man and a woman only.  But Judges have no right to make law, which is what is happening when they try to nullify law which has been duly processed through state governments.  America’s Founders gave to the national government only 30 powers in the original U.S. Constitution.  Marriage is not named in that Constitution because it was to be left to the individual states as to how marriage would be defined, and the process by which it would be entered into.

In his original American Dictionary (1828), Noah Webster defined marriage as:

“The act of uniting a man and woman for life…Marriage was instituted by God Himself for the purpose of…securing the maintenance and education of children.”

The purpose of marriage is mainly to secure “the maintenance and education of children.”  God wants the next generation to become carriers of His own life, so they will teach the truth of the Gospel of the Kingdom of Christ to their children (Psalms 78:5-6).  Thus, each generation will become carriers of the life of God.  This is what makes marriage so important.  This is why it has always been satan’s target.  He wants marriage destroyed to keep truth from reaching the next generation.  Understanding this, it’s easy to know that divorce is satan’s plan, not God’s (See Malachi 2:16).

This is the reason for the tremendous attack on the concept of marriage in America the last 75 years.  The attack has come on two fronts: The first is easy divorce promoted by legislators who (because of ignorance or fear) refuse to stand for the truth of God concerning marriage.  The second front is the effort to redefine marriage by homosexuals.  Both of these movements are fueled by satan in order to destroy God’s plan to get the truth to the next generation.  Families that are not living according to the Bible do not communicate very much Biblical truth to their children.  Since easy divorce and redefined marriage help to bring disorder to the family, they are tools of satan to hinder God’s flow of truth to future generations.

Jesus is plain in His teaching that marriage is a covenant for life.  He stated, “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.” (See Mark 10:9)  Covenant means the “meeting of minds.”  When children see their parents working to “think with God” and each other, they feel secure because there is a higher Authority Who gets the last word on any issue.  This models for children how to live in submission to the will of God.  And, while only God can enable spouses to think enough alike to be able to stay together for a lifetime, He CAN DO THAT!

Only God can enable us to agree on the basics of life; that is: Who God is, who we are, and what His plan is for our lives.  God teaches spouses faith by teaching them to walk in His covenant of marriage.  This is why He “flushes” out things on which spouses disagree.  He calls on us to stay in the marriage, even in the midst of huge disagreements.  This forces us to call on Him for help to do this.  Through this “pressure” of disagreement, He thus grows us into His image.  We learn to trust His way when we definitely do not feel like trusting Him!  And through our example, children learn to face their difficulties in life instead of running from them.

Are you standing for marriage?  Are you standing in YOUR marriage!  You can only do this by knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior.

Think about it; because if you don’t, someone else will do your thinking for you—and for your children!  And you won’t like what that brings to you.  I’m Don Pinson, this has been Think About It.
