“Pastors Taught America’s Founders”

To any honest, diligent student of history it is obvious that the generation of America’s Founders was one of (if not the) wisest generations that ever walked this earth. The Republic they gave birth to would rival the greatest nations on earth after only fifty years. Many political thinkers would come here just to try to find the secret of the genius of this Republic. Since then, probably more people have, of their own free will, immigrated here than to any other nation on earth; which shows us the greatness of what they created.

Where did America’s Founders get this kind of wisdom? Who taught them as children and young people in such a way so as to produce the greatest nation in world history? It was basically two groups: Their parents—and their Pastors. And since the Pastors did much of the teaching of their parents—the average adult heard 15,000 hours of Bible teaching in their lifetime—we can honestly say it was the Pastors who shaped their thinking. Their Pastors were generally men of deep Biblical study. And most sermons were not on how to go to heaven—parents taught that to their children—Pastor’s sermons were great studies on how to live out the Bible in their present day culture; including the Biblical method of operating education, business, and government. Thus, you could say that, in essence, our Founders learned to think about education, economy, and government, from their Pastors’ explanation of those subjects from the Bible.

“Raised To Rule”

So many people, who say they are believers in Jesus Christ as their Master and Savior, seem to be so hesitant about participating in government. Nearly half of them are not even registered to vote! I believe this reveals a much deeper problem than just avoiding government involvement. It shows a lack of understanding (or you might say ignorance!) of what the Bible says of the position believers have in Christ.

While in my twenties, I was struggling with my walk with Christ. Some days I’d be mostly obedient. Some days I’d be mostly disobedient! I was told by many that this was the normal Christian life; that there would always be a struggle with the flesh and only when we arrived in Heaven would we ever have victory in this warfare. But I kept coming across passages in the Bible like:

“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1st Corinthians 15:57)

And in John 10:10, Jesus said,

“I am come that you might have life…and have it more abundantly.”

And the Apostle Paul wrote in 2nd Corinthians 2:14,

“Rediscovering Our Constitution”

“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this…”? Do you know what document contains these words that I just read? It could just be that your life—and the life of your children—depends on it!

Rediscovering Our Constitution - Heritage Ministries of Kentucky

John Jay was one of America’s Founders who would become the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. His great wisdom guided us in those early years as our Constitution was being tested. His understanding of liberty and how it passed to the next generation is so powerful—and pertinent to our present day. He wisely stated:

“…But let it be remembered that whatever marks of wisdom…may be in your constitution, yet like the…forms of our first parents before their Maker breathed into them the breath of life, it is yet to be animated…From the people it must receive its spirit…”

“Vice, ignorance, and [lack] of vigilance will be the only enemies able to destroy it…Every member of the State ought diligently to read and to study the constitution…By knowing their rights, they will sooner perceive when [those rights] are violated, and be the better prepared to defend [them]…

“Hence it becomes the common duty…to unite in [subduing][those unrestrained by morality]…and thereby diffusing the blessings of peace.”

“Education During The Founder’s Era”

What made America rise to prominence among the nations of the world in just 50 years from its founding? Why did this young Republic equal England and France in world influence in so short a time? Many would make visits here to try to find that out.

One of those, a French political scientist by the name of Alex De Toqueville, would identify in no uncertain terms to secret of America’s greatness. He wrote:

“I sought for the key to the greatness and genius of America…in her fertile fields and boundless forests…I sought for it in her…Congress and in her matchless Constitution.

Not until I went into the churches of America and heard her pulpits flame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power.

“Pastors Are Stewards Of Civil Government”

Pastor Jonas Clark stood on Lexington Green on the steps of his church building on April 19th, 1775, watching 600 British troops file onto the grassy area. He had taught his people for twenty years the Biblical principles of why and how to defend civil liberty. He did this because he knew the Bible taught that civil government was God’s institution just like the home and the church were God’s institutions. He stood there that day and watched nine of his men die on that field. They died because they stood and took the first volley. They had learned from their Pastor that only defensive war is just. For God to fight with them, they must not fire the first shot. They didn’t. God honored their sacrifice; the British, though a vastly superior force, were routed that day by the Colonial forces. A “shot was heard round the world” about how you defend civil liberty God’s way!

Samuel Davies, a Pastor in Virginia, was Patrick Henry’s inspiration for powerful public speaking. Laying “line upon line” the great Pastor’s reasoning both stirred and gave courage to the young boy. Later, this boy would become the statesman who would fire the American citizens to rise up and refuse to give up their liberty to teach the Gospel of Christ in this land. His stirring words, which used to be the stuff of speeches in our country, went like this:

“The Beginning Of The American Revolution”

In April 1775, our forefathers began to defend our Liberty against the greatest army the world had ever seen. It is one of the most noble and inspiring stories in all of history. Let me tell you the story you probably were never taught because it has been purposely left out of textbooks.

The American colonies had become extremely prosperous because of Biblical educational, economic, and governmental systems. They believed their liberty was God-given. They further believed God had blessed their land because the Gospel was allowed to touch all areas of their culture.

But the King of England in the 1770’s was a tyrant who didn’t care for the Gospel because it condemned his lust for power. Thus, in the spring of 1774 he succeeded in getting Parliament to pass the ‘Regulatory Acts’. These laws shut down all the colonial legislatures, which had ruled the colonies since the early 1600’s, and replaced them with his own governors who had dictatorial powers. The Americans knew they had to, at all costs, defend their God-given liberty; thus they began to prepare for war. Still, they were not professional soldiers, but rather farmers and merchants committed to protecting their homes against the army of their own government.

“It’s Enough!”

When rulers try to rule without “the fear of God” (Exodus 18:21), they miss the very foundation of success. The worldview that denies the existence of God, as well as His right to rule us and our institutions can end only in confusion and death to liberty. That’s why in recent programs we’ve been sharing the Biblical foundations for ourselves and our nation from the book Why God Birthed America. We continue with the story of Jesus’ Resurrection:

“What Mary didn’t see in that Garden was the host of others who were there. The many believers from the past who were standing around Jesus, waiting for the most triumphant entry ever staged. They were the ‘spirits of just men made perfect.’ (Hebrews 12:22-23) Abel, Noah, Moses, David, Daniel and many, many others. They did not yet have their new bodies, like the one Jesus had. But they knew His was the certain promise that theirs would one day come. (Ephesians 1:14)

“He was leading them from Paradise (the place where they had been at rest ever since their death) into heaven. The Father in heaven had ever wanted them with Him, but something had to happen first. Since all the spirit realm operates on legal principles (Psalms 94:20), there was a legality that must be taken care of before they could enter the Presence of the Almighty God.

“As they reached the gate of heaven, they found it opening to them. Light more brilliant than the mind can conceive shines from the other end of this main street of heaven. The angels bow and worship, announcing the return of the Son of God. Jesus strides toward the end of that street. He walks right up to the throne of the Almighty, Creator God, His Father. And then, the most sublime act in all of history is done by Jesus: He simply stretches His hands toward the Father, palms up, presenting the blood of His fresh wounds.

“The Price Paid For Our Redemption”

Ladies and Gentlemen, the following story is why you and I can know God…

“…This One was different. Some of the soldiers had noticed the way He had taken the scourging without crying out like most men did. The soldiers who had been at the trials had noticed the way He didn’t answer trumped-up charges; refusing to dignify such accusations with an answer. The times He did speak revealed His deep inner peace. He seemed to be drawing strength from a Source they couldn’t identify, but yet was very evident.

“However, the supreme test was about to occur.

“The soldiers get up, shift their armor into place, and start to form a circle around Jesus. But then they see something that they’ve never seen in all their years of crucifying men. Jesus, of His own will, moves over to His cross, and stretches Himself out on it. He then extends His hands and waits for the nails. They are shocked! Never, among all the many experiences of crucifixion they’ve had, have they ever had anyone willingly accept a cross. This Man is different! Jesus actions seem to say, “No one takes my life from Me; I lay it down willingly.” But why? Why would He embrace a cross?

“Who’s The Best At Influencing Government?”

Often when I speak in churches I ask people to be involved in their government in order to protect the liberty of their children. Many times they look at me with bewildered looks, as if to say, “How can I affect government?” I’m sorry we’ve gotten to such a state.

When the Pilgrims came to America they had been through many years of government oppression. And before them, many others had felt the restrictions of ungodly government and education. Because of the hurt they had experienced through un-Biblical government, they knew they must establish education which was true and government which was just. They knew the Bible taught that liberty could not be maintained in any nation apart from teaching the ways of God in their schools; neither could they expect liberty to continue if their government was not the form of government taught in the Bible. Thus, they worked to create cultural institutions which God taught in the Bible: Institutions which would teach and protect the moral foundation necessary for Republics to carry out their God-given purpose.

When people look at me with a questioning face that says, “How can I affect government?”, I know they have bought into the lie that only a handful of people are smart enough to govern others. That is just exactly the opposite of what the Pilgrims believed.

“His Order, Our Help”

Except for one thing, the state of our land could be very discouraging. If we look only at the Moslem threat, the homosexual agenda, or the work of socialists inside our governments, we could well be in despair. However, if any person or people set their will to walk in the order of God, they have proven to be invincible under any circumstances. It is my hope, that if we can experience revival, we would need not fear any enemy, internal or external.

The Bible teaches that one with God is always a majority. Moses stood at the Red Sea without a single earthly hope of being delivered from Pharaoh’s fast approaching army. But because he was obeying God in bringing out His people from bondage, God said through Moses,

“Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD…” (Exodus 14:13)

Moses obeyed, and, to his amazement, he watched God’s people get delivered from the greatest army on earth. God still does this today.

Patrick Henry encouraged our Founding Fathers to not be afraid to stand in God’s order against the world’s greatest army of their day in his “Give me liberty or give me death!” speech. He finished it by saying,

“Besides, sir, we shall not fight our battle alone. There is a just God who presides over the destinies of nations; and Who will raise up friends to fight our battle for us…”
