The Epic Battle - Part 7 1Why did the Roman soldier beneath Jesus’ Cross feel afraid to face God at the Judgment?  He may, just then, have realized the repentant thief had the answer.  “We, indeed, suffer justly.”  That was it:  We’re wrong!  Doing things the way we want was not right after all!  It was our Creator’s right to tell us—His creation—how to live.  After all, only then would we know how to fulfill His purpose for us.  We were guilty of “insubordination”!  This a soldier could understand.

By now it was noon, and a strange thing begins to happen.  The sky begins to darken with an eerie blackness.  For a few brief moments, the air was so still it seemed to choke you as the darkness deepened.  Then the earth began to tremble.  Lightning bolts were exploding against the ground.

Then, unexpectedly, the voice of Jesus pierces the darkness.  In a loud, wrenching voice Jesus cries out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46, emphasis added)

In the thick forests of the Virginia coastal region, Indian children had played for generations. They had imagined themselves brave warriors or as the mothers of great chiefs. They knew the land and how to gain their living from it. However, no one in 1607, could imagine the power that one of these young lives would have on the destiny of America. But she was no surprise to God, her Creator. He had planned her life, as short as it would be, to be one of the most useful in history.

Her name was Pocahontas and she met the Jamestown settlers quickly after they had landed. Captain John Smith, the bold adventurer, wanted to meet the natives. He left the safety of the group shortly after they landed and went looking for the inhabitants of the region. However, his experience with them would not prove altogether friendly. He was quickly captured and taken to Chief Powhatan, the father of Pocahontas. After preparing a meal for him and treating him like an honored guest, suddenly the Indians turned on him, apparently preparing to kill him. They bound him and laid his head on a large stone. Then, picking up clubs and dancing wildly, they advanced toward him. Smith expected at any moment to be beaten to death. But then, in a shocking move, young Pocahontas, only eleven or twelve years of age, suddenly moved toward him, taking his head and pulling it up into her lap, she bent over him, shielding him from the screaming braves and cried out to her father to spare his life. “Education Is Part Of The Gospel”

Education is Part of the Gospel 1The dying mother called her young son to her side.  The nine-year-old boy would remember these words the rest of his life.  She said to him, “Son, I want you to live as I have taught you; to love your Heavenly Father and keep His Commandments.”  Later, after her memorial service had just ended and everyone was walking away from the grave, the little boy ran back and threw himself down on her grave sobbing, crying out to God to help him live like she had requested.  That little boy was Abraham Lincoln.  He would later say, “All that I am, my angel mother made me.” (Abraham Lincoln:  The Man and His Faith, Frederick Owen (Tyndale House, 1976), p.5)  His earliest memory of her was her teaching him to memorize the Ten Commandments as he sat as her feet (Ibid, p.6).

This was the kind of education that produced generation after generation of respectful, productive, people who made America the most prosperous nation in world history.  This way of educating produced government that was the freest in the world.  In fact, it is attributed to Abraham Lincoln to have said, “The philosophy of education in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.”  No nation can be greater than its method of education.
