“Billy Graham: A Life Well-Lived!”

Billy Graham was a man of whom it can be said: His was “a life well-lived!” From the personal humility and integrity in which he walked to the incalculable impact he made in millions of lives around the globe; his, was a life “well-lived!”

Dr. Graham was converted to Christ in an evangelistic meeting in 1934 led by Dr. Mordecai Ham. He was about sixteen years of age. He surrendered to preach while a college student in Florida in March 1938. His zeal to win souls to Christ knew no bounds. And in these years he would learn the secret of being used by God. He and a friend spent most of Sunday afternoon on the dirt floor of a garage praying for the church in which they had ministered that morning. The church had seemed dry and unresponsive to the Lord. “Billy Graham’s Impact on Our Family”

As a teenager, I heard a recording of two sermons by a man named, Billy Graham. Having surrendered to preach the Gospel not long before that, I was captivated by the messages and the power with which Dr. Graham delivered them. Those messages inspired me to want to communicate the truth in a powerful way.

Later, as a twenty-year-old Pastor, I would have the privilege of attending the Billy Graham Knoxville Crusade in 1970. There, I was blessed to serve as a counselor during the invitation times. It was extremely moving to be on the field among those who came searching for a relationship with Jesus Christ. During the day, I met with about 500 other preachers in the Crusade School of Evangelism, where we heard some of the greatest men of God in America share how they had led their churches to reach people with the Gospel of Christ. “George Washington’s Christianity”

Each year on February 22, we celebrate the birthday of the Father of our country, George Washington. There are some things about George Washington that my schooling never taught me. Things like what Rev. Henry Muhlenberg, Pastor of the Valley Forge Lutheran Church in 1777, said of him when our Continental Army spent the winter there. I quote Rev. Muhlenberg:

“I heard a fine example today, namely, that His Excellency General Washington rode around among his army yesterday and admonished each and every one to fear God…[and] to practice the Christian virtues. From all appearances, this gentleman does not belong to the so-called world of society, for he respects God’s Word, believes in the atonement through Christ, and bears himself in humility and gentleness. Therefore, the Lord God has also…marvelously preserved him from harm in the midst of countless perils, [ambushes] fatigues, etc., and has hitherto graciously held him in his hand as a chosen vessel.”
