Joshua called together the leaders of Israel and challenged them to finish the work of establishing the Jews in the Promised Land.  He admonished them,

“…choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served…or the gods of the Amorites…but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(Joshua 24:15)

The nations around them worshiped (through their idols, Psalm 106:37) a god—satan—which produced a dictator for their civil government.  God, our true Creator, had given to the Jews, through Moses, a government where the people chose their rulers through elections.  The first form of government enslaved the people to their king, the dictator; God’s form of government enslaved the government servants to the people, the citizens, giving to the people in government only specifically written powers which they could exercise over them (we call that a “Constitution”).  The nations around them had a dictatorship for their form of government; the Jews had a republic for their form of government.  And the Jews experienced, through their republic, more liberty and justice for their citizens than any nation had ever experienced up unto that time.

As America’s Founding Fathers were growing up as children one of the greatest revivals in all of history was occurring.  It would come to be called “The Great Awakening” as the Holy Spirit of God awakened Americans to the faith their Pilgrim ancestors had known so well.  The Bible became the standard once again for morals as well as manners.  They would grow up with the view of God and the view of man which the Bible revealed.  The Ten Commandments would set the boundaries for what was right and wrong in their generation.  The Biblical structure for education, business, and government would become their quest in building their society.  Their view of God was not the “teddy bear” god we’ve tried to shaped Him into in our day; rather, it was the Biblical revelation of Him as the awesome Creator and Ruler of all that is.  Because He was our Maker and Redeemer (in Christ) He was the One Who would be our Judge.

Thus, our current view of ourselves as being the focus of life was not their view.  They believed what the Bible teaches about man:

Recently a young friend of mine sent me an article he was disturbed about. A man who, no doubt, is a sincere believer, was saying Christians should not be involved in government because, as he said, “God’s kingdom isn’t here on earth”. He went on to put forth the idea that our work as Christians is to share the Gospel with the lost, not to lobby in government.

This is a common mistake I hear believers make. They divide life into the ‘spiritual’ and the ‘secular’ parts. In their thinking, neither is supposed to affect the other.

Is God’s kingdom only in Heaven? If that were true, why did God say in Genesis 1:26 that the reason He made us was so we would be “…in His image, after His likeness, and have dominion over…all the earth (emphasis added)? If we were made to look like God, live like God, and rule like God, as this verse teaches, whose kingdom did He desire to be on this earth?

With the election only a month away, the candidates are fervently pushing their agenda, trying to convince us we should trust them with the future of our children.  That is what’s at stake, you know.  They promise us ‘all will be well’ if we give them our vote.  But with all the lies politicians have told us throughout our lives, why should we even bother to vote?  Well, the last two generations, many have decided not to.  We now think we’ve had a good voter turnout if 50% of those registered to vote get to the polls.  Not to mention the huge numbers who haven’t cared enough to even register.  How sad!

Why has this happened?  Since the 1920s most of our universities have been teaching that there is no God and life is all about us, and our pleasure.  Without knowing that the God of the Bible created us in an instant of time, we have no association with Him, which means we have no reason for self-worth, or for committing our lives to worthwhile tasks.  We simply “live for the weekend” as many put it.

Why did the Pilgrims come to America with the hope of Jesus Christ ruling—through His followers—their educational, economic, and governmental systems?  They came with that hope because they knew that RESURRECTED CHRIST personally!  This had come through “…the diligence of some Godly preachers…” by whose preaching “…their ignorance and sins [had been] discovered unto them…”  They had repented of their “ignorance and sins” and had received Christ as their Lord and Savior.  Thus, the power of the Resurrected Christ flowed in them.

But, as they studied the Scripture, they found that this Resurrection life of Christ wanted to flow not only in their personal lives, but through their lives out into their local communities.  They didn’t buy satan’s lie that Christianity must stay in the home and the church.  Matthew Henry, the great Puritan preacher, revealed their thinking when he Continue reading

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.  That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.  That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

Note America’s Founders spoke without a stutter as to why they had the right to establish a new government among themselves:  The Declaration of Independence stated:

“That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government…” (emphasis added)

Why did they believe they had the right to “institute new government”?  Because they believed what the Bible taught about civil government.  The Bible identifies the Source of government when it says Continue reading

Socialist politicians are everywhere ranting that all should have free education; free medical care; free housing.  My only question to that is:  “Says who?”  Does God say it in the Bible?  Or is it purely the idea of some man?

Socialism Takes - It Doesn't Give- 1God teaches us that He has given to man a system by which his physical and material needs can be met.  It’s quite simple, but very, very effective.  God releases into us at the moment of conception certain abilities which, if we follow His leading, He will later direct into a calling through which our needs will be met.  A surgeon gets thinking and motor skills which will enable him to remove harmful things and reset body tissue so that God’s natural healing can take place.  An automobile mechanic gets the understanding in his mind and skill in his hands by which to diagnose and repair your vehicle.  God then intends for us to be taught by parents, pastors, and other teachers how to work with those skills to better the lives of others.  They, in turn, pay us for our services, which betters our lives.  God’s Kingdom gets advanced in both parties because each realizes that God’s way works; which encourages faith in God’s Word and His calling in other areas of life.

Socialism works just the opposite of this.  It teaches that, “there are just some people who can’t take care of themselves.”  So we give tax-funded food, clothing, and housing to a few in the beginning.  Then politicians (not statesmen, mind you!) see Continue reading

Sometime back, there was a letter to the editor of one of our newspapers in this region, which sadly expressed the lack of understanding of some people in our land.  This man began by saying, “Our state is under the spell of a myth, the myth of a Christian nation.”  He goes on to assert that most of our leading Founding Fathers were deists.  In particular he names Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and George Washington.  He then goes on to define deism:  “Deism is a way of looking at the world and believing there’s a god who created it, but then left things alone (i.e., no miracles, no son of god, no divine intervention).”

I fear this man represents some in America who simply misrepresent the facts about our Founders, either by ignorance or design.  Why don’t we do a novel thing?  Let’s let the Founders speak for themselves!  Wouldn’t that be a different approach to education?

It was 1775.  On April 19th the British army, which had been our army up until that time, attacked a group of farmers standing on Lexington Green to defend their homes.  That group of some seventy-five farmers were members of the local church at Lexington.  Their Pastor, Jonas Clark, had been preparing them for this moment by his preaching over the last twenty years.  He had taught them the Biblical principles that support self-defense from an aggressive enemy.  Captain Jonas Parker, head Deacon and leader of the group on the Green, called out to his men, “Steady men, steady; don’t fire unless fired upon.  But if they want a war, let it begin here.”  The British did fire, and eight Americans died.  The rest of the Americans then returned the fire, and then they scattered to the woods to make their way to Concord, where they would join with a much larger force of Americans.  At Concord they would repulse the British attack and win the day.  The impossible had occurred:  An army of farmers had defeated the British army of professional soldiers, the greatest army on earth in that day.  Why?  Colonial Pastors would give the credit to their God, Jesus Christ.  As Jedediah Morse would reveal, the inspiration behind the fighting of our army of farmers was the Ministers of the Colonies.  Morse stated Continue reading

Government Reveals Our Degree of Selfishness 1When Davey Crockett was a Congressman he learned a lesson we desperately need to relearn in our nation.  He once voted for some $20,000 to be set aside from the national treasury to be given to families in north Washington, whose houses had burned.  It seemed to be the compassionate thing to do.  But later, back on the campaign trail, a well-respected farmer told him he could not again vote for him.  When Crockett asked him why, the man, Horatio Bunce, replied that he had violated the Constitution by voting that money for the destitute families.  Bunce then began to explain that the Constitution allows Congress only the right to vote appropriations for the duties which the Constitution enumerates that the government has the power to do.  It gives no power to give money to those citizens who need help.  Bunce said to Crockett, quote:

“The power of collecting and disbursing money at pleasure is the most dangerous power that can be entrusted to man…

“If you have the right to give to one, you have the right to give to all; and, as the Constitution neither defines charity nor stipulates the amount, you are at liberty to give to any and everything which you may believe, or profess to believe, is a charity, and to any amount you may think proper.  You will very easily perceive what a wide door this would open for fraud and corruption and favoritism, on the one hand, and for robbing the people on the other.  No, Colonel, Congress has no right to give charity.”

Davey Crockett learned a vital lesson that day:  If the people didn’t agree to something in the original Constitution—or haven’t amended it since concerning that power—then the Congress, the President, or the Supreme Court has no right to do it—PERIOD!!!  This view of the Constitution is called Original Intent, and it is the only view that will preserve our liberty!
