Ladies and gentlemen, the following story is why we have Christmas:

The Christmas Story1 “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away [privately]. At the Christmas season, a lot of emphasis is given to a lot of things other than the One the season is all about—JESUS! In the next two messages we hope to tell His story! It all started like this:

The Promise of Deliverance1“There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”

So often, at this time of year, we sing Christmas carols in our churches or at family gatherings.  Some have melodies which raise our emotions to the heights.  Others woo us into quiet meditations on the deep meaning of Jesus’ entry into this world and what His invasion into human flesh really means to us.  But the carol that does both those things for me—is Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.  Written by the great song-writing revivalist, Charles Wesley, the revelation in this hymn of what Christ did for us is astounding!  Take a journey with me as we attempt to allow the Holy Spirit to teach us what Jesus did for us.  Wesley wrote:

Hark!  The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild– God and sinners reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations, rise, join the triumph of the skies;
With the angelic hosts proclaim, “Christ is born in Bethlehem.”
Hark!  The herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ, by highest heav’n adored, Christ, the everlasting Lord:
Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with man to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel.

This time of year there’s a lot of reference to the Baby Jesus in the manger.  That’s a good thing.  We think of the Christ child and hope comes to us that God literally invaded history and brought hope that there could be “peace on earth toward men of good will” (Luke 2:14).

And yet, for all this good feeling surrounding the Baby Jesus, few ever think beyond the manger.  And even of those who do think of His important life, death, and resurrection, even fewer ever come to understand His impact on all civilization; and particularly here in the western hemisphere.  Jesus was the most important Lawgiver in world history.  His influence over moral and civil law in this world makes Him, without question, the most influential person in all of history.  Yet, few law schools in America ever acknowledge His powerful impact at all.

Recently I was with a friend at a magnificent overlook of some of our Eastern Kentucky mountains.  A park system sign stated that this deep gorge had been formed over millions of years as the river ran through these mountains.  What an unscientific explanation for such an astounding piece of creation!  But it’s typical of what our children are being taught everyday through the public-school textbooks and the secular media.  This plan is designed to separate us from our Creator—and thus, our accountability to Him.  And yes, there are those who say they believe it because it deceptively helps the Judgment to seem unlikely; and some of those are knowingly working to change our whole nation to a “secular” (i.e. “without God”) way of life.

On October 31st, a lot of people in this land will celebrate Halloween.  Though begun as a day to remember many Godly people and the truth they gave to the world, it has degenerated into becoming the high day of satanism throughout the world.  Hideous acts of worship to satan will be done on this night.  The occult will have its greatest celebration on this night.  But it was not always so in America.

Up until the mid-1800s, America celebrated a different day on October 31st.  It was known as Reformation Day; and it reminded Americans of the great price that was paid for the “liberty of conscience”.  It was a celebration of the liberty brought to the personal life and the life of the nation as a result of men laying down their lives to stand with the truth of the Bible.

Columbus Defended 1“In 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean blue.”  Thus, children in America learned the little rhyme which firmly fixed in our minds who was responsible for the American continents being discovered.  The last two generations haven’t learned that because some in what is called “higher education” circles didn’t want us to know who Columbus was.  Many in those circles came to be ashamed of Columbus’ God because they were convicted by the mentioning of the Name of Jesus.  Since Columbus was a devout man and often mentioned God and Jesus Christ, they tried to remove him from our history.  Now that war against his name has reached new heights.

A statue of Columbus in Binghamton, New York, had the word “murderer” painted on it.  In New York City, Columbus’ statue in Central Park was vandalized.  The New York City mayor’s, answer to that was to appoint a commission to consider which historical monuments should be removed!

The Church - Key to a Strong Republic 1Many people wonder why America is going downhill morally. Why is there so much drug use? Why are the gangs with all their violence growing so rapidly? Why is homosexuality capturing so many of our young people? Why do so many people refuse to marry, and instead just “live” with someone? Wrong living comes from wrong thinking; and wrong thinking comes from wrong listening!

The reason for these wrong ideas was pointed out in a Barna Research Group survey taken some years ago in Kentucky. The survey revealed that, while 82% of Kentuckians said they were Christians, over a third of those surveyed said they only attended church once every six months. This poor church attendance mocks the Scriptural command to,

“Not [forsake] the assembling of ourselves together…” (Hebrews 10:25)

But perhaps you’re thinking, “What difference does it make how often someone goes to church?” It makes a lot of difference! It makes a lot of difference to an individual, a family, and a community. Pastor Jonas Clark stood on Lexington Green on the steps of his church building on April 19th, 1775, watching 600 British troops file onto the grassy area.  He had taught his people for twenty years the Biblical principles of why and how to defend civil liberty.  He did this because he knew the Bible taught that civil government was God’s institution just like the home and the church were God’s institutions.  He stood there that day and watched nine of his men die on that field.  They died because they stood and took the first volley.  They had learned from their Pastor that only defensive war is just.  For God to fight with them, they must not fire the first shot.  They didn’t.  God honored their sacrifice; the British, though a vastly superior force, were routed that day by the Colonial forces.  A “shot was heard round the world” about how you defend civil liberty God’s way!

“America’s Christian Founding”

The Bible says that God,

“…established a testimony in Jacob…which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:  That the generation to come might know them…who should arise and declare them to their children:  That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments…” (Psalm 78:5-7)

America's Christian Founding 1Why did God tell fathers to tell the stories of His workings in the past to their children?  Because hearing the stories of God showing up in history helps the next generation know that God is real; and that He cares about His creation, man.  That knowledge helps them not be deceived into thinking that “We’re on our own here in this world.”  Knowing how God has worked in previous generations encourages us to seek Him that we might know Him and His purpose for us, as an individual in the present generation.  This is also why satan does not want us to know of God’s workings in the past; not in Bible history, or in our nation’s history!
