We should carefully take in the words of the Father of our country, George Washington. In his first inaugural address he stated words of such wisdom that they should sober and inspire every one of us who are Americans. If heeded, they will inspire us to become an instrument in the hands of Almighty God for the good of our children and the entire earth.

Just after Washington took the oath of office to defend and uphold the newly written Constitution of the United States, he spoke these words of wisdom:

“We ought to be no less persuaded that the…smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained;…the preservation of the sacred fire of liberty and the destiny of the republican model of government are justly considered as…perhaps finally, staked [with] the experiment entrusted to the hands of the American people…”

Let’s look carefully at Washington’s words, since they spell out for us the way of success in the effort to pass the torch of liberty to our children.

One of the men who helped to found our nation, but is almost completely unknown today, was Noah Webster.  He wrote our first dictionary, a work of twenty years in the making, which he published in 1828.  He published his Blue Backed Speller, which sold millions of copies over the following 100 years.  It was an entire learning course compacted into a small book, which the pioneers used to educate their children.  In 1832 he published his History of the United States and included a “brief exposition of the U.S. Constitution” because he wanted young people to know early that our nation was a republic, not a democracy; and that our Founders got the ideas for its purpose, structure, and spirit of operation from the Bible.  Keep in mind that when he uses the term republican, he’s not talking about a political party, but rather a particular form of government.

He stated it this way:

“The brief exposition of the constitution of the United States, will unfold to young persons the principles of republican government; and it is the sincere desire of the writer that our citizens should early understand that the genuine source of correct republican principles is the Bible, particularly the New Testament…”

This day in time we really need to look back and see the Hand of God in our history in this nation. Let’s review a segment of our history that is not commonly known.

While the Pilgrims and Puritans were establishing themselves in New England, a giant step toward human liberty was occurring in Scotland. In 1638 the King of England was trying to force Roman Catholicism on the Scots. For years the Scots had been more and more throwing off this yoke, and they were not about to submit to what they believed were satanic rituals that would plunge them back into the slavery of the “dark ages”.

Thus, they came together in a covenant (which means the meeting of minds) vowing to fight to the death to refuse Catholic tyranny in their churches and civil government. Over 3,200 people signed the original document—many signing it in their own blood—saying we will die rather than live as slaves to a government that won’t submit to the moral law of God.

Is there any good reason that we should study history? Do documents like The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution hold any significance for us today? They most certainly do! Number one, God tells us in the Bible to “Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations…” (Deuteronomy 32:7) He wants us to understand that history is “His-Story”. What He taught a previous generation He wants us to bring into our generation. That with which satan enslaved a previous generation, God wants us to get free of. But if we don’t know history, how can we keep the good and remove the bad? Since all of us start life in this world with a sin-root in our thinking (Romans 5:12), we will tend to move toward satan’s enslavement in our society unless we know what God taught previous generations. This is why God taught the Jews that their education system must be the channel through which the parents teach their children His ways. This is what President Woodrow Wilson reminded us when he stated:

“A nation which does not remember what it was yesterday, does not know what it is today, nor what it is trying to do….”

History is for our instruction; let us not be so arrogant as to dismiss it as unimportant. Our Declaration of Independence listed 27 reasons the King of England had given us to declare our independence from his rule.   Let us consider some more of those reasons so we can learn from our history how to avoid the political slavery from which our Founders were escaping.

There are three positions Christians are taking in the current pressure. Some are saying, “It’s so bad now. Persecution is growing. These are just the last moments of time, and I’m just looking for Jesus to come back any day.” Which translates into: “I don’t believe we can do anything about this time, so I’m just thinking about me and I’m going to hide my head in the sand. Don’t count on me to protect the liberty of my children.” On the other hand, there are those who would love to see liberty preserved, they just think that there’s no hope now. But then there’s a third group—perhaps fewer in number—but those who thrill the heart of God. They’re saying, “This is the hardest time the world has ever seen, and it may be the beginning of the end of history; but come what may, until ‘the trumpet sounds’, I’m going to do everything I can to preserve the liberty of my children to be able to hear and respond to the Gospel of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ!”

Which group are you in? “…What can the righteous do?” (Psalm 11:3) in this pressurized time?

We can choose to believe that God tells the truth! Jesus said, “In the world you shall have tribulation [(pressure)]; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33) Jesus promised us that pressure would come, but He’s already faced it and He overcame it. Now, He lives inside those of us who are committed to Him; He will now live through us in this world of pressure. And because of His life in us, others will be led to find Him as their life also. Light shines brightest in the darkest night!

Recently one of the churches in our community held a special meeting on Flag Day, June 14th. They honored the United States Flag, “…the Republic for which it stands…”, and the soldiers who have defended that Republic. Our original Continental Congress approved the basic design of our Flag on June 14th, 1777, which is why the day has been set aside as a day to honor our Flag.

I remember being taught the importance of our Flag as a child by my Dad and Mom. Dad was a World War II veteran and had a great love for our country. The public school I attended likewise taught us respect for country and the Flag which represents it. We saluted the Flag and pledged allegiance to it every morning. This is rarely done now as the emphasis through the education system is on nations coming together in a one-world government. We were taught the Biblical understanding that:

“God hath made of one blood all nations of men…and appointed…the boundaries of their habitation.” (Acts17:26, emphasis added)

Now most children don’t even know the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Let’s carefully consider this pledge in an effort to regain its powerful message. The Pledge states:

Whenever I’ve been in New England studying America’s history, I’ve always been awe-struck by the many monuments and markers in that region which told of our past. Our beginnings there speak to us in a great way concerning our Biblical roots. Everywhere I turned there were references to the work of Jesus Christ in the lives of our ancestors. Why did our forefathers place these monuments there? Why are their words so specific in their instruction to us?

For example, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where the Pilgrims first landed, there is a large stone placed over the spot where they buried half their number that first winter. On the back of that stone are printed some words we definitely need to know. They Continue reading

What difference do words make anyway?  So what if one says ‘isn’t’ and someone else says ‘ain’t’?  As one comedian said, “Saying ‘ain’t’ is sure better than saying ‘aresn’t’!”  While people’s expressions can be humorous, the reality is:  Words are important.  The Bible says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” (Proverbs 18:21).

Words are important!  Words communicate ideas.  Ideas in our thoughts produce actions in our bodies.  Those actions will produce life or death for us and others, particularly the next generation.

The ‘watering down’ of our language is doing great harm to our American way of life.  Knowing fewer definitions to words keeps us from understanding the language of our Founding Fathers.  Their writings were powerful because they could communicate such profound truth with so few words.  Many of the words they used we now have no clue what they mean.  This means we likely will Continue reading

In April of 1917 the United States entered into World War I.  While all wars are caused by the selfishness of man, the desire of our people as a whole was not our gain.  Rather, it was our desire to protect the liberty which God had entrusted to us.  And our people responded in great numbers to the request of President Woodrow Wilson to observe a Day of Public Humiliation, Prayer and Fasting on May 11, 1918.  He requested our people to:

“…humbly and devoutly…acknowledge our dependence on Almighty God and to implore His aid and protection…with religious solemnity and the offering of fervent supplications to Almighty God for the safety and welfare of our cause, His blessings on our arms, and a speedy restoration of an honorable and lasting peace to the nations of the earth…”

Our prayers “were heard and graciously answered.”  Few would argue that it was American arms which won the day for liberty in the nations of the earth and brought this mighty scourge of war to an end.  And while Continue reading
