It may have been Abe Lincoln who said,

“The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next.”

(Lincoln, Abraham. Attributed. Herald Star (Steubenville, Ohio, 1984) | Stephen K. McDowell and Mark A. Beliles, America’s Providential History (Charlottesville, VA: Providence Press, 1988), p. 79; (4th printing, 1994), p. 95 | Karen Morgan, People of the Past (Historical Presentations, P.O. Box 426, Cortland, Ohio, 44410, (330) 638-8606))

Perhaps no statement better summarizes the direction life in this world will take.  Since the word “govern” means “to control”, what happens in government is going to determine the boundaries you and I walk in during our brief stay on this earth.  Lincoln correctly reasoned that whatever goes into the mind will show itself a generation later in the type of government that is ruling.  Whatever is good in government; attribute that to the education of the previous generation.  Likewise, whatever is bad in government, lay the blame for that at the feet of the education system of the previous generation.  And to think of it, I can’t think of very much that’s good in our governments today.  Oh well, ‘if the shoe fits, wear it’!

The Bible taught us this principle long before Abe Lincoln related it to education and government.  It says, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked.  Whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap.” (Galatians 6:7).  God has built an unchangeable law into this universe that teaches everything is the fruit of a previous thought and action.  It’s inescapable.  That being so, shouldn’t we carefully consider what we are putting into our children’s minds?  In our day information comes at our children in many ways:  Music, magazines, movies, TV, friends.  Information through friends, however, is the most important to young people according to the surveys.  This could make school the most important thing in our children’s lives, for that is Continue reading

“What Is, and Why Is, There an Impeachment?”

What Is, and Why Is, There an Impeachment 1What is, and Why is, there an impeachment going on in Washington, D.C.?

Noah Webster was probably the greatest scholar of the English language which the world has ever seen.  In his 70,000-word American Dictionary of the English Language, which he published in 1828, he defined the word impeachment like this:  It is,

“An accusation or charge brought against a public officer for maladministration in his office…In the U. States, it is the right of the House of Representatives to impeach, and of the Senate to try and determine impeachments.”

What does the U.S. Constitution say about impeachment?  Article II, Section 4, of the Constitution gives us these few words about impeachment:

“The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

What do these few words mean?  Perhaps the best way to understand them is to define them from Webster’s 1828 Dictionary; since that dictionary was written in the generation of our Founders:  Thus, its definitions were the common understanding of that day.  Definitions of words have been Continue reading

Since January 22nd, 1973 we have killed over sixty million of our own children.  That number is near 20% of our total population in this country.  And don’t be fooled by the political rhetoric; only 1% of those killings had anything to do with rape, incest, or the mother’s life being in danger.  99% of this murderous holocaust has been done because these children were thought to be an inconvenience!  What heights of selfishness we’ve now reached!

Not that our Congress, the voice of the people, ever legalized it!  It was the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973 that illegally declared abortion legal:  It was because we, in the church, sat by and griped, instead of getting involved in the voting process identifying lawmakers who supported such a hideous crime, and replacing them with our votes.  The God Who made us and to Whom we will give a full account of our earthly deeds, is not blind to these hideous murders of children; or our refusal to get involved to stop it.

God warned His people in the days of Jeremiah that their nation would Continue reading

“The Must of Biblical Education”

A leader among America’s Founding Fathers made the following statement about education:

“We have a dangerous trend beginning to take place in our education…We’ve become accustomed of late of putting little books into the hands of children containing fables and moral lessons…We are spending less time in the classroom on the Bible, which should be the principal text in our schools…The Bible states these great moral lessons better than any…manmade book.”

(Ames, Fisher. September 20, 1789, in an article published in the Palladium magazine. | D. James Kennedy, The Great Deception (Fort Lauderdale, Florida: Coral Ridge Ministries, 1989; 1993), p. 3.)

The Must of Biblical Education 1

Thus spoke Fisher Ames, the Founding Father who authored the wording of the First Amendment to the Constitution. Could this Founder have possibly wanted the “separation of church and state” idea that liberals now use to remove the Bible from schools?

But to continue with our thoughts on education: Since education teaches children how to think; and since, in the next generation, those thought processes become Continue reading

Whoever Gets the Mind Gets the Nation 1Benjamin Rush was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence.  He was also the Father of America’s original public schools—schools that were controlled by parents, and NOT the state.  Benjamin Rush made this statement about the education of children:

“Let the children…be carefully instructed in the principles and obligations of the Christian religion.  This is the most essential part of education.”

(Rush, Benjamin. 1787, A Plan for Free Schools. David Barton, “America, God Shed His Grace on Thee” (Garland, TX: American Tract Society, Box 462008, Garland, Texas, 75046; 1994), p. 4.)

Noah Webster, the Father of America’s original education method—the one that made us the greatest nation on earth—said these words:

“Education is useless without the Bible.”

(Webster, Noah. “Our Christian Heritage”, Letter from Plymouth Rock Foundation (Plymouth, MA: The Plymouth Rock Foundation), p. 5.)

How has America been changed from the nation of Biblical thinking it once was?  It’s because of the clash of two completely opposite “worldviews”:  One Biblical; one “man-centered”.  We have lost, with humanistic (that is “man-centered”) education, the ability to reason.

When we left “God-centered” education, we lost the “sowing and reaping” principle.  That happened because we Continue reading

Why Did Jesus Come to Earth 1

During the Christmas season, much is said and sung about Jesus coming to earth.  Many love the warm, gentle thoughts of a little Baby being born and having His birth announced by angels.  But how many actually ever ask the question:  Why did Jesus come?  We can only answer that from the Bible.  Because, even though there is historical evidence that Jesus did live in Palestine in the first century, the only revelation to be found concerning why He came, is to be found in the Bible.

Jesus, Himself, declared His reason for coming in Luke 19:10; there He stated,

“…the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

But what does lost mean?  To understand that, we must first understand why God made man in the first place.

God said concerning the creation of man:

“…Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion…over all the earth…”

It was God’s intent that we should “look, live, and rule” in this earth just as He does in heaven and in earth.  To do this God, Himself, would have to come to live inside us, and through us, look like Himself, live like Himself, and rule like Himself.  So God gave us a choice as to whether we would let Him come to live in and through us in this world.  We chose to Continue reading

Ladies and gentlemen, the following story is why we have Christmas:

The Christmas Story1 “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away [privately]. But when he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall bring forth a son; and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for…he…shall save his people from their sins.’ Now all this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel; which is, being interpreted, God with us.’ And Joseph arose from his sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took unto him his wife; and knew her not till she had brought forth a son: and he called his name JESUS.” Continue reading

Gods First Step toward Fixing Us 1When I was ten years old, three ladies in the community where I grew up in Pike County, Kentucky came faithfully to our school each week to teach us the Bible.  They taught us who God was, who we were, and what His plan was for our lives.  One of the things they taught us was to memorize the Ten Commandments.  Then they told us God wanted us to obey those Commandments.  So I decided I would obey the Ten Commandments.  I committed myself to “Have no other gods” before God, my Creator.  I committed to not steal or lie or desire what belonged to somebody else.  I committed to always obey my parents.  Was I in for an awakening!  I found out that, try as I might, sooner or later, I would break one of those Ten Commands.  And you see, our Bible teachers knew that’s exactly what would happen:  Because that’s the very reason God gave those Commands.

Perhaps you’re thinking:  “Don, I don’t understand.  Why would God give us a command that we couldn’t keep?”  He does so because He’s wiser than we are.  You see, He knows that when we refused to let His life indwell us in the Garden of Eden, we received instead “darkness” to indwell us.  That is:  We lost our understanding of why we were alive.  From then on, satan planted different ideas in our mind about Who God was and why we were alive.  As we believed his lies, we plunged into darkness about the reason for our existence.  Selfishness replaced purpose.  This would Continue reading

“God’s Government”

This time of year we often hear the words:

Gods Government 1For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with…justice
From that time forward, even forever…
(Isaiah 9:6-7)

These words, taken from Isaiah 9, express the longing of every thinking person on earth.  Most everyone wants justice and order and peace:  In other words, good government.  Every conscientious person wants the kind of government which will produce these things in a society.  Every good person wants good government.  Then why is good government so hard to find?

Number one, good government is hard to find because, as William Penn, said,

“Governments, like clocks, go from the motion men give them; and as governments are made and moved by men, so by them they are ruined [also].  Let men be good, and the government cannot be bad…But if men be bad, let the government be ever so good, they will endeavor to warp and spoil it to their turn.”

(Penn, William. April 25, 1682, in the preface of his Frame of Government of Pennsylvania | A Collection of Charters and Other Public Acts (Philadelphia: B. Franklin, 1740), pp. 10-12 | Gary DeMar, God and Government – A Biblical and Historical Study (Atlanta, GA: American Vision, 1982), p. 115.)

So governments go bad because man has Continue reading

Why They Came - Part 2 1The spray from the waters of Cape Cod blowing in the wind was covering the men in this small boat.  They were looking more and more like ‘ice men’ as the spray quickly turned to ice as it hit their beards and clothing.  The snow was becoming blinding.  The wind was picking up now, making any site of land impossible.  Not only was it looking like they wouldn’t be able to find a place to build their houses today, they were beginning to fear this might be their last day on earth.  This storm was such a rage, they began to pray in desperation that they could find any safe harbor.  Suddenly, as if God had intervened, the wind died enough for one of them to see what he thought was a shoreline.  They struggled desperately with the waves and the elements, and with great difficulty finally made land.  They had no clue where they were, for in weeks of looking around Cape Cod for a place to settle their families, they had never been here before.  They were really afraid because their guns had gotten wet and would not fire.  They had already encountered the Indians in this area and they had proven to be enemies instead of friends.  The men prayed and prayed for the storm to stop and for God to protect them.

The next morning when the sky had cleared the men found they were on an island in what is now Plymouth Bay.  The storm had blown them through the narrow entrance of the bay just as if God had planned it so.  Indeed they would come to believe He had; for as they looked across the bay to the mainland, they could see what would become their home.  The land was gently sloping, good for farming, with four fresh water springs.  The top of the hill was perfect for defense against unfriendly neighbors and the harbor was deep enough for ships bigger than the Mayflower to anchor.  Indeed, they believed God had prepared and preserved this spot for them.  But they didn’t know the half of it!

Four months later, they would Continue reading
