In the beginning, when God made man, He intended that man should be a vessel of His own life; having the very life of God flow through His spirit, soul, and body. But we chose not to allow God to come to live inside us and release His life through us, by eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil—instead of eating of the Tree of Life. Thus, we stepped outside the Order of God and starting operating in a different system than that for which we were designed (Genesis 3). We began to try to provide for ourselves by selfish acts. If we had surrendered to God and allowed His life to come inside us, everything we needed for life would have flowed up and out through us. The work we would have done would have been for the purpose of working with God: Not for the purpose of making sure we had enough to eat. Thus, we flipped God’s system on its head and began to operate from a completely different system than God designed for us.

Between the years of 1730 and 1770 hundreds of thousands of immigrants poured into the United States.  While all the nations of Europe were represented in this sea of people, by far the largest groups were from Scotland and Ireland and came to be called the “Scots-Irish”.  Most came into America through Philadelphia and quickly made their way into the American wilderness.  These were folks used to life in mountainous terrain, and they rapidly settled into the Allegheny and Appalachian Mountains.  With no love of the English crown, since they had been oppressed by the English in their native land, they quickly became Americans and identified with the growing movement toward independence.

Their long history of struggling for freedom made them excellent soldiers in Washington’s continental army.  They would figure in key battles throughout the Revolutionary War, often being the group that would turn the tide in battle.  For ages they had loved liberty more than life, fighting to the death for the right to local self- government rather than submitting to London’s bureaucrats.  They would prove to be the moving force that began the British’ downward spiral toward ultimate defeat.

It was December, 1777. George Washington’s army filed silently into their winter camp at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Washington would tell of the amazing commitment of these men by reporting how you could trace their path by the bloody tracks they were leaving. A great many of the 11,000 were barefooted; many were nearly naked in this freezing cold. More than 2,000 would die that winter from lack of food and shelter. Yet the miracle was—they didn’t leave. Why?

While it won’t be revealed completely until we stand before the Lord at the Judgment, at least one reason is the praying that George Washington did that winter. There were different reports by people who said they came unexpectedly upon Washington kneeling in the snow in the woods, earnestly pleading with God for the cause of his nation. While Washington was a very private person, and not at all given to showy religion, people close to him reported of his consistent devotions to God. Could it be done?  Could the new United States with its “ragtag” army stand up to the greatest army on earth?  Could these thirteen newly united states hold together and defend their Declaration of Independence from England?  Almost no one in the world believed they could.  Indeed, the citizens of this new nation knew they couldn’t—unless, the God of Heaven intervened and defended them because they were within His order in declaring themselves free of the disordered government of Great Britain.

The new government commissioned George Washington to be the General of this new army.  The ink was hardly dry on the Declaration of Independence when the British landed 30,000 troops on Long Island, N.Y.  Washington dispatched a young, but proven, officer with several hundred soldiers to scout out the new British troops; but, under no circumstances was he to attack the British until Washington joined him with the main body of the army.  The element of surprise meant everything since Washington was Continue reading →

It had been a long struggle. For over twenty years the American Colonies had appealed to their king, asking him to recognize his departure from English law. The Americans, because of their Biblical foundation, understood that government servants (including the king) had to do what they did according to the law of God. King George III showed no respect for what the Bible had to say about government, and thus ignored every request to come back into the order of God.

The Story of the Birthing of The United States of America1Finally on June 7th, 1776, Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced a resolution on the floor of the Continental Congress stating:

“RESOLVED, That these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States; that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown; and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved.”

A committee was appointed, which included Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Ben Franklin, to write a Declaration of Independence which would, upon the approval of the Congress be sent to the King of England. The Congress then recessed for three weeks to give the committee time to write the Declaration.

“Christians Must Resist Un-Biblical Government”

From my earliest days of knowing Jesus Christ through the new birth, I remember being taught that Christians should, quote, “obey the law of the land.” Romans 13:1 was used to support this teaching. It states,

“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”

The reasoning ran like this: Since God allowed the current civil government to exist, we, as Christians, should submit to it. Later I would learn that there’s just enough truth in that idea to be dangerous!!

Christians Must Resist Un-Biblical Government - Heritage Ministries of KentuckyDon’t misunderstand me: God did create civil government, as we just read about in Romans 13. He did it to control the “sin-root” in man so that one man could not take away another man’s rights of “life, liberty, or property”. And all citizens, including Christians, are to obey law that is designed to protect those rights. That part of the teaching was right. But the implication that all laws do protect God-given rights was the part that was bad wrong! Wicked government servants, like Pharaoh or Nebuchadnezzar, can make bad laws. In that case Christians are not obligated to obey those laws! If we submit to bad law, all liberty will quickly be destroyed!

The Bible says, “Remember those who led you…” (Hebrews 13:7) Yet, in America we’ve forgotten what those who founded this nation were like. We no longer know how they thought or what they did. Someone has truthfully described us as having “national amnesia”.

John Adams: Example of Founders’ Thinking 1The great danger in a nation forgetting its past is that they will lose the foundational ideas that made that nation great. We’re missing out on the inspiration provided by the stories of our ancestors who did amazing things to birth, grow, and protect America. Worse still, we’re missing the interventions by God Himself so that we no longer credit Him with America’s existence. Thus we lose the very Strength Who has brought the good to us which we now enjoy.

A renowned minister, A.W. Foljambe, spoke great wisdom when he said in 1876:

“The more thoroughly a nation deals with its history, the more decidedly will it recognize and own an over-ruling Providence [in it], and the more religious a nation [it will] become; while the more superficially it deals with its history, seeing only secondary causes and human agencies, the more irreligious will it be.”

When the Pilgrims came here in 1620, they had learned some things that recent generations have had stolen from them. For instance, they had come to understand that the basis of the government is covenant. No state can exist very long if its citizens are not in covenant with each other.

The word covenant is defined as “a meeting or agreement of minds”. The minds of a people living under a particular government must be in agreement on the basics of life if they are to be able to walk together throughout the generations.

They must agree about Who God is, and who He says they are, and what His plan for them is, both as individuals and a nation. Without this agreement, education, commerce, and government just become Continue reading →

A leader among America’s Founding Fathers made the following statement about education:

“We have a dangerous trend beginning to take place in our education…We’ve become accustomed of late of putting little books into the hands of children containing fables and moral lessons…We are spending less time in the classroom on the Bible, which should be the principal text in our schools…The Bible states these great moral lessons better than any…manmade book.”
