The Pilgrims landed in America nearly 400 years ago. But do you know why they came to America? Was it to start a new life? Well, yes; but what kind of life? Was it so they could be free? Well, yes; but what kind of freedom were they looking for? Because most of us don’t know the answer to these questions is why we continue to accept—or even vote for—more and more of the slavery from which they were fleeing.

Perhaps you would say, “They came here for religious freedom.” And you would be right—but, what kind of religious freedom? Did they come merely so they could sing songs to God and study the Bible in their own gatherings? No, they came with a much broader desire than that.

You don’t have to be an expert in economy to recognize that what this national government is doing is not only causing our economy to sink lower and lower; it is moving it toward total collapse:  And it would seem as if collapse is the goal of this administration.  Why would they promote socialism when it’s already been tried in America—and failed!!

For the first two-and-a-half years the Pilgrims were here, they tried to live by a socialistic economic system.  They nearly starved to death.  Recognizing the seriousness of their situation, their Governor, William Bradford, called for a meeting of the leaders of the colony.  They had long known their problem was this socialistic system they were laboring under.  The businessmen who had financed their trip had insisted they live by a common storehouse.  In other words, they were to put all their produce into one storehouse, no matter which family had raised that produce.  Then, they were to take out as little as they could get by with for their own needs, and send the rest of it back to England to their financiers as payment for their debt.  The Pilgrims knew this would not work, but the businessmen insisted this is how they must do it.  The Pilgrims well knew the Scripture taught that,

“…if any would not work, neither should he eat.” (2 Thessalonians 3:10)

In the beginning, when God made man, He intended that man should be a vessel of His own life; having the very life of God flow through His spirit, soul, and body. But we chose not to allow God to come to live inside us and release His life through us, by eating of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil—instead of eating of the Tree of Life. Thus, we stepped outside the Order of God and starting operating in a different system than that for which we were designed (Genesis 3). We began to try to provide for ourselves by selfish acts. If we had surrendered to God and allowed His life to come inside us, everything we needed for life would have flowed up and out through us. The work we would have done would have been for the purpose of working with God: Not for the purpose of making sure we had enough to eat. Thus, we flipped God’s system on its head and began to operate from a completely different system than God designed for us.

When the Pilgrims came here in 1620, they had learned some things that recent generations have had stolen from them. For instance, they had come to understand that the basis of the government is covenant. No state can exist very long if its citizens are not in covenant with each other.

The word covenant is defined as “a meeting or agreement of minds”. The minds of a people living under a particular government must be in agreement on the basics of life if they are to be able to walk together throughout the generations.

They must agree about Who God is, and who He says they are, and what His plan for them is, both as individuals and a nation. Without this agreement, education, commerce, and government just become Continue reading

The Pilgrims - Overcoming the Hard Times 1Forefathers Monument, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, is dedicated to the memory of the Pilgrims: Specifically to the memory of, “…their labors, sufferings, and sacrifices in the cause of civil and religious liberty.” One of the five statues which make up Forefathers Monument is Morality. This statue reveals the Pilgrims desire to live conforming their actions to the Bible. They demonstrated how Christ could live His life through us if we were surrendered to Him as a living Master. And that was true in hard times as well as good times. Their story shows us this reality—even in the most difficult circumstances.

When they came together in a church covenant in 1605 to: “…walk together in all His ways…whatsoever it should cost them…” (Bradford, William. Of Plimoth Plantation), it would cost them dearly. Several times over the next three years, English deputies would burst into their worship meetings, hauling the men off to jail; fining them and keeping them locked up for thirty days. This cost them financially because they were unable to work their farms during those times.

In 1623 the Pilgrims celebrated a time of Thanksgiving with their Indian friends, Chief Massasoit and his Wampanoag tribe. The Pilgrims were grateful to God for their Indian friends. The peace treaty into which they had entered helped both peoples to go on with their daily lives in an ordered manner. This is, of course, the purpose of civil law; to protect the God-given rights of life, liberty, and property. When this is done, the resulting order allows society’s institutions to function without the interruption of chaos. The Pilgrims’ Pastor, John Robinson, had taught them that this order flowed from Biblically based civil government, and thus, the first thing they did when they arrived was to write the Mayflower Compact; which instituted this type of government. I believe their new civil government was one of the things they were most thankful for on those first Thanksgiving Days.

God so used one man, Patrick of Ireland, in the 400s to so change Ireland that it would be a base from which the Gospel would be carried to the ends of the earth in that day! Patrick led thousands to Christ in Ireland. He started over 700 churches in twenty-eight years! He trained and set apart 700 bishops and 3000 ministers to further disciple the people who had come to Christ. He started training centers to equip believers to carry the Gospel to their own—and to the world. And Patrick understood something we’ve lost: That is, the institution of civil government was God’s institution and must operate by His truth, the Bible, if it is to fulfill its purpose of protecting God-given rights of life, liberty, and property. He reformed (reshaped) Ireland’s governments to agree with Biblical principles. This is exactly what we need in America today!

Patrick’s disciples would carry to the world this Biblical message of reshaping cultures through Christ. They confronted the Barbarians, who were over-running Europe at the time, and neutralized with the Gospel of Christ their savage destruction. Indeed one historian believed Continue reading

“Alvin York: Godly Educator”

Love Your Enemies- But STAND Against Them- 1On October 8th, 1918, an Army corporal from the mountains of Tennessee did an amazing thing while fighting in World War I.  Alvin York, a shy young man, who didn’t even want to go to war, performed so well in the line of duty he would later be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.  York, who had been converted to Christ after being known as a “hell-raiser”, struggled with going to war because Jesus had taught that we should be peacemakers.  However, he finally reasoned from the Bible that, as he would say,

“If a man can make peace by fighting, then he is a peacemaker.”

Once committed to his country’s cause, he distinguished himself as an amazing marksman.  That ability would serve him well this October day.

His patrol was moving behind German lines who were ‘dug in’ within deep trenches.  The Germans discovered York and his troop, and opened fire.  The American patrol was pinned down and York would later report that the bushes all around him were shot to pieces yet he was miraculously spared.  At great risk to his life he worked his way around the hillside where he could Continue reading
