On February 3rd in 1970, God worked a modern day revival in central Kentucky. A Chapel service at Asbury College was invaded by the Holy Spirit of God. His work would go deep in the hearts of students, faculty members and many others, for the next eight days. Classes were cancelled as most of the college family waited in the Presence of God. Honest confessions of sin, private and public, were the norm as one person after another made their way to the altar at the front of the auditorium. After their surrender of every area of their lives, they would walk up onto the platform and give their witness to the whole group as to what God had done in them. This was repeated in hundreds of individuals over the eight day span as there were always some people in Hughes Auditorium for every hour of those eight days.
Those days were characterized by deep repentance and, thus, lives being transformed. One rebellious Senior’s testimony describes well what would happen to many. In Robert Coleman’s book One Divine Moment, which recounts the story of the revival, this young man is quoted as saying,
“I’m not believing that I’m standing here telling you what God has done for me. I’ve wasted my time in college…but Christ has met me and I’m different. Last night the Holy Spirit flooded in and filled my life. Now, for the first time ever, I am excited about being a Christian!”
(One Divine Moment, Robert Coleman, Spire Books, 1970, p. 18)
And after those intense days of meeting together finally came to a close, the revival only continued to grow as word of it spread; invitations came in from all points of the compass, asking for witness teams to come to other schools and churches and tell of the Spirit’s move at Asbury.
Southwestern Seminary in Texas was one of these. As the Asbury students shared their stories, God began to deal with hearts at Southwestern. One gathering in their Chapel lasted from 4 P.M. till the “wee” hours of the morning as one student after another poured out their heart in honest confessions of sins and surrender to the will of Jesus Christ. One student reported:
“God was declaring His presence and demanding an audience with each of us…we felt ourselves closeted with Him, and we experienced both the honor and the hurt of His private dealings with us. It was awesome…We were meeting God in all His majesty.”
(Ibid., p. 63)
God came to churches all across the land as a result of the telling of His moving at Asbury. A small church in South Pittsburg, Tennessee, was the beginning place for an Asbury team. Before many days, the local newspaper concluded that “perhaps 500 of the 700” local high school students had made commitments to Christ as Lord (Ibid., p.79).
God came to Asbury after a number of students sought Him for revival for months in advance of February 3rd. God has not changed. He wants to move wherever people will meet His conditions of revival. He promises in Jeremiah 29:13,
“…ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart.”
God came to thousands in the years following the Asbury revival, as the story of His moving spread more and more.
I was one of those.
What about you? Is the life that has your name attached to it surrendered to Him? Will you surrender it to Him? This is your greatest need. It is the greatest need of our nation!
Think about it; because if you don’t, someone else will do your thinking for you—and for your children! And you won’t like what that brings to you. I’m Don Pinson; this has been Think About It.
