The Bible says that God,

“…established a testimony in Jacob…which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:  That the generation to come might know them…who should arise and declare them to their children:  That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments…” (Psalm 78:5-7)

America's Christian Founding 1Why did God tell fathers to tell the stories of His workings in the past to their children?  Because hearing the stories of God showing up in history helps the next generation know that God is real; and that He cares about His creation, man.  That knowledge helps them not be deceived into thinking that “We’re on our own here in this world.”  Knowing how God has worked in previous generations encourages us to seek Him that we might know Him and His purpose for us, as an individual in the present generation.  This is also why satan does not want us to know of God’s workings in the past; not in Bible history, or in our nation’s history!

The Bible says, “Remember those who led you…” (Hebrews 13:7)  Yet, in America we’ve forgotten what those who founded this nation were like.  We no longer know how they thought or what they did.  Someone has truthfully described us as having “national amnesia”.

John Adams: Example of Founders’ Thinking 1The great danger in a nation forgetting its past is that they will lose the foundational ideas that made that nation great.  We’re missing out on the inspiration provided by the stories of our ancestors who did amazing things to birth, grow, and protect America.  Worse still, we’re missing the interventions by God Himself so that we no longer credit Him with America’s existence.  Thus we lose the very Strength Who has brought the good to us which we now enjoy.

A renowned minister, A.W. Foljambe, spoke great wisdom when he said in 1876:

“The more thoroughly a nation deals with its history, the more decidedly will it recognize and own an over-ruling Providence [in it], and the more religious a nation [it will] become; while the more superficially it deals with its history, seeing only secondary causes and human agencies, the more irreligious will it be.”

In declaring our Independence from England, were our Founders rebels, pushing against God-ordered government?  Or were they revolutionaries, re-establishing God-ordered civil government?  It’s way past time we again considered the twenty-seven reasons they listed for declaring Independence.  They stated:

Todd Starnes, a noted news commentator, was quoted the day following the shooting of U.S. Representative, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, while Republican House members were on a baseball field practicing for a charity game.  Starnes reported, I quote:

Yesterday was a bad day for America.  It was an ugly day.

This day in time we really need to look back and see the Hand of God in our history in this nation.  Let’s review a segment of our history that is not commonly known.

The Scottish Covenant and American Liberty 1While the Pilgrims and Puritans were establishing themselves in New England, a giant step toward human liberty was occurring in Scotland.  In 1638 the King of England was trying to force Roman Catholicism on the Scots.  For years the Scots had been more and more throwing off this yoke, and they were not about to submit to what they believed were satanic rituals that would plunge them back into the slavery of the “dark ages”.

Thus, they came together in a covenant (which means the meeting of minds) vowing to fight to the death to refuse Catholic tyranny in their churches and civil government.  Over 3,200 people signed the original document—many signing it in their own blood—saying we will die rather than live as slaves to a government that won’t submit to the moral law of God.

For Memorial Day, a restaurant in our town displayed a message on their marque that read:

“‘Thank you’ to those who never came home.”

Why We Remember 1Why do we remember our fallen military heroes?  This was the original purpose for Memorial Day when it was begun during the War Between the States.  We remember for two reasons:  One, God tells us to remember our past as a nation, so we will see His Providential Hand in it; and thus, He will become more real to us.  When we remember His work in the past, it aids our faith in believing Him for miracles now.  The Bible commands us to remember our history.  It states,

“Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask thy father, and he will show thee; thy elders, and they will tell thee.” (Deuteronomy 32:7)

In traveling about this region of several states, I’ve noticed the many prayer meetings that have been taking place the last three years.  Many of those expressed great concern for the state of our nation and the elections of 2016.  Having won most of those elections I’ve been very interested to see if the prayer meetings would continue.  I’m happy to say many of them are.  However, I have a great concern.

Our Vision Must Increase 1Jim Cymbala, Pastor of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, says that prayer is born out of a “felt need”.  We felt our need acutely before last fall’s elections.  We could see the persecution of Christians rising in this nation; we could see the degrading of our nation by previous administrations; we felt the growing socialist control over our children, especially if they were in a tax-supported school.  We cried to God out of hearts which felt the need of a change that we couldn’t work.  Many of us believe that God answered those desperate cries and mercifully granted us a President and many other government servants who are, at least, respectful of God, the Bible, and the name of Jesus.  They honor our flag and our Constitution.  Compared to what we’d had for many years, all this is so wonderful it’s easy to think the crisis has passed.  But don’t be deceived!

“True Prayer is Our Hope for America”

It had been extremely hot and dry.  There had hardly been any rain for twelve weeks.  The corn and other crops had wilted and looked to be beyond reviving.  This would mean starvation come winter.  There was no hope in their own ability to fix this situation.  But this group had learned to trust God, their Creator, as God, their Sustainer.  Thus, they called for a day of fasting and prayer to seek God’s face as to why He had withheld the rain.  After genuine repentance and worship that day in 1623, the rain began to fall that very night and to their astonishment, their corn revived and produced wonderfully that summer.  The Pilgrims proved, once again, that prayer to God Almighty, the Father of Jesus Christ, is the way to move things in this world!

True Prayer is Our Hope for America 1In the midst of our current crisis, we must remember that it is not up to us, but the Lord Himself, to change our hearts and forms of government.  While our part is to work with Him in what He’s doing, our praying will be what ultimately wins this battle.  God stirs us to prayer, reminding us,

“…you have not because you ask not.  You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may consume it on your own desires.” (James 4:2-3)

In the first two years of our War for Independence from England, George Washington’s army had very few victories.  They were out-manned, out-gunned, and out-supplied.  Yet they refused to give up and clung tenaciously to the hope of liberty.  And some miracles occurred in the winter and spring of 1778 which would begin to fulfill that hope.

As they had marched into Valley Forge to establish their winter camp, Washington spoke of how this was a most remarkable army.  Though just volunteer farmers, they had stood up to the British army, the greatest in the world, with dogged determination.  Even now, as they struggled into their winter camp, their sacrifice was evident.  Many had clothes which hung in threads, exposing their naked bodies to the cold.  Washington recorded how one could trace their steps by the path of blood left by many who had no shoes of any sort.  That winter over 2000 of the 6000 man army would die from lack of food and exposure to the elements.  Yet, they stayed.  Their love of liberty meant more than any physical hardship they were experiencing.
