In March of 1863, Abraham Lincoln issued a call for the Union to repent before God; that call is so appropriate for today that I wanted to share it with you. May God help us to hear this with our heart!
“Whereas, the Senate of the United States, devoutly recognizing the Supreme Authority and just Government of Almighty God, in all the affairs of men and of nations, has, by a resolution, requested the President to designate and set apart a day for National prayer and humiliation.
And whereas it is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions, in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon; and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.
And, insomuch as we know that, by His divine law, nations like individuals are subjected to punishments and chastisements in this world, may we not justly fear that the awful calamity of civil war, which now desolates the land, may be but a punishment, inflicted upon us, for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole People? Martin Luther was that young priest, and his bold act threw off the religious yoke of “the tyranny of the mind”. And while most in America now think of October 31st as Halloween, that’s a “Johnny-come-lately” idea. Up until the mid-1800s, on October 31st, we celebrated “Reformation Day”, for that was the day the mind of man began to be set free from hundreds of years of living in the fear of what other men thought. Once again, man began to learn that only God has the right to shape our minds for He created us, and thus by rights, owns us and our minds. What Martin Luther did would start to restore the precious freedom Jesus talked about when He stated,
“In 1492, Columbus sailed the Ocean blue.” Thus, children in America learned the little rhyme which firmly fixed in our minds who was responsible for the American continents being discovered. The last two generations haven’t learned that because some in what is called “higher education” circles didn’t want us to know who Columbus was. Many in those circles came to be ashamed of Columbus’ God because they were convicted by the mentioning of the Name of Jesus. Since Columbus was a devout man and often mentioned God and Jesus Christ, they tried to remove him from our history. Now that war against his name has reached new heights.
With more disrespect being shown to our flag, even within our own borders, it would do us well to revisit our heritage! Fort McHenry (where in 1812 a battle raged which inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner) was named after a man who served as a medical soldier in George Washington’s army, and later signed the U.S. Constitution. His name was James McHenry. While unknown to us today, James McHenry was one of those men who laid such a firm foundation for America that during the 1800s it would grow to become the greatest nation on earth. The recent rash of attacks on monuments of heroes like Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson should be a matter of great concern to all freedom-loving Americans. Because of the massive deleting of our history from the minds of the last three generations, most of us are taking this “sitting down”, instead of letting our voice be heard about this wholesale theft of the liberty of our children and grandchildren.
