Each year on February 22, we celebrate the birthday of the Father of our country, George Washington.  There are some things about George Washington that my schooling never taught me.  Things like what Rev. Henry Muhlenberg, Pastor of the Valley Forge Lutheran Church in 1777, said of him when our Continental Army spent the winter there.  I quote Rev. Muhlenberg:

“I heard a fine example today, namely, that His Excellency General Washington rode around among his army yesterday and admonished each and every one to fear God…[and] to practice the Christian virtues.  From all appearances, this gentleman does not belong to the so-called world of society, for he respects God’s Word, believes in the atonement through Christ, and bears himself in humility and gentleness.  Therefore, the Lord God has also…marvelously preserved him from harm in the midst of countless perils, [ambushes] fatigues, etc., and has hitherto graciously held him in his hand as a chosen vessel.”

There’s a little-known story about Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday we celebrate this week, which needs to be told.

Shortly before his death, an Illinois clergyman asked Abraham Lincoln, “Do you love Jesus?”  Mr. Lincoln solemnly replied:

“When I left Springfield I asked the people to pray for me.  I was not a Christian.  When I buried my son, the severest trial of my life, I was not a Christian.  But when I went to Gettysburg and saw the graves of thousands of our soldiers, I then and there consecrated myself to Christ.  Yes, I do love Jesus.”

Is America a nation birthed by God?  Well the Bible says all nations are birthed by God:  In Acts 17:26 the Bible says,

[God]…hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined…the bounds of their habitation;”

Let’s continue to learn about it from the book, Why God Birthed America

“God’s plan had not changed, even though man had left the good beginnings brought about by Jesus’ death, resurrection, ascension, and outpouring of His Spirit into believers.  Still yet, God had not given up on His dream of man being a vessel through which He could live His life.  And He was about to Continue reading

Have you ever asked yourself the question:  “Why is there so much confusion in the world about Who God is?”  Let’s answer that by reading more of the book, Why God Birthed America.  I quote from the section about the Dark Ages:

“Satan had always wanted control.  His attempt to take over God’s throne in heaven was the very reason he was cast down from his original position as the worship leader of heaven (Ezekiel 28:10-16).  Once he was defeated in his attempt to gain control of heaven, the next best thing he could do was to try to gain control of earth.  Given the rule of earth by Adam, its God-ordained master, satan had rapidly Continue reading

This month marks 45 years in which the murder of unborn children by abortion has been legal in America.  Not that our Congress, the voice of the people, ever legalized it!  It was the U.S. Supreme Court in 1973 that illegally declared abortion legal.  Because we, in the church, sat by and griped — instead of getting involved in the voting process and attending law-making sessions, so as to identify the law makers who supported such a hideous crime—and replace them with our votes — now some 60 million of our own children have been murdered.  And that in the place that should be the safest on earth; their mother’s womb.  The God Who made us and to Whom we will give a full account of our earthly deeds, is not blind to these hideous rippings apart of babies’ bodies in their mother’s womb!

God warned His people in the days of Jeremiah that Continue reading

The Bible states:  “Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.” (Proverbs 14:34)  Thus, revealing to us the pathway to becoming a great nation.  “Great” being defined as:  “Providing the greatest amount of liberty for the greatest number of people” in a nation.

This is what happened in America during the first three centuries of our existence.  This was proven by the fact that so many people wanted to come here.  Life was simply better here than in most other countries of the world.  So, the people came.  They still want to, even though we’ve lost much of the “righteousness” we once walked in.  However, present backsliding does not take away from the truth of the righteousness that was walked in for the first two-thirds of our history.  Indeed, if we’re going to Continue reading

Sam Adams, the Father of the American Revolution, which secured our liberty in America, stated:

Christ Brings Freedom to the Whole Man 1“The right to freedom being the gift of God Almighty, the rights of the Colonists as Christians may best be understood by reading and carefully studying the institutions of The Great Law Giver and the Head of the Christian Church, which are…clearly written…in the New Testament.”

(Adams, Samuel. November 20, 1772, in his pamphlet entitled, The Rights of the Colonists, in section: “The Rights of the Colonist as Christians.” The Rights of the Colonists (Boston: Old South Leaflets), Volume VII, 1772 | John Eidsmoe, Christianity and the Constitution – The Faith of Our Founding Fathers (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House, A Mott Media Book, 1987; 6th printing, 1993), p. 254.)

Sam Adams believed that our liberty was rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  It was simply the extension of the internal liberty Christ brings into our spirit and soul when we submit to Him as our Master and Deliverer.

The prophecies surrounding Jesus’ birth reveal Continue reading

Jesus once said,

“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.” (Matthew 12:35)

How we think inside produces our actions outside.  Jesus is pointing out to us that the mind will determine what we choose, and thus, how we act.  So what we put into the mind will determine the way we act.

Why Jesus Came 1

So what should we put into our mind?  What are the most basic truths we need to know in order to function as God intended us to function?  What truths will Continue reading

Though common men, the Pilgrims who came to America in 1620 were some of the wisest people who ever lived.  They came together about 1605 in a covenant which meant they each believed that the Bible was completely true; and that it could be trusted to meet one’s need in this world, just as it could be trusted concerning eternal things.  They believed the God of the Bible to be sovereign, or “supreme in power”, as Noah Webster would define the word in his first American dictionary.

The Pilgrims and The Sovereignty of God 1They believed when church leaders disagreed with the Bible, those church leaders were always wrong, never the Bible.  They believed when the King disagreed with the Bible, the King was always wrong, not the Bible.  They believed when church writings disagreed with the Bible, those writings were always wrong, not the Bible.  They lived this out in their daily lives and proved that the teachings of the Bible were far superior to any ideas of men about how to build a nation.  To put it simply, they believed Continue reading

The tragedy is heart wrenching.  A Sunday morning in Texas filled with hope and joy, becomes the last day twenty-six people would be on this earth.  Another twenty or so were in critical condition, wounded by a gunman who entered the church and began firing while the people were worshiping.  The gunman evidently killed himself after wrecking his vehicle, while being chased by two men from the scene.  Only God knows the pain of families and friends and the little Texas church in Sutherland Springs.  All of us hurt for them.  We pray for their comfort by “the God of all comfort”.

When Tragedy Comes 1

At a time like this we ask, “Why?”  Some ask “why” because they are heart-broken at their loss.  This is a natural response to a tragedy that touches us personally.  But the truth is, we may never, in this world, know the answer to that.

But others ask “why” because they want to avoid having to explore this realm of “the shadow of death” in which they find themselves so uncomfortable.  It’s easier to Continue reading
