Why Christians Avoid Political Involvement 1At election time I used to tell the church I pastored:  “Now go vote; that is a God-given privilege; but don’t get involved in politics.  That’s just a dirty business, and if you get involved with it, you’ll get dirty too.”  I learned that statement from older Pastors who had helped me start in the ministry.  Why have Pastors refused to be involved in the political realm?

We’ve bought into the lie that if we preach the Gospel everything else will be taken care of.  And, I would agree with that—if we were preaching the Gospel Jesus said to preach.  Most of us as Evangelicals have thought we were preaching the Gospel; and we were—it’s initial part.  We’ve told people that we all were sinners and needed a personal Lord and Saviour.  That is exactly right.  That’s where Christianity starts.  But it doesn’t end there, like many of us have thought.  When Jesus said in Matthew 28,

“Go ye therefore and teach all nations…”

He was not only telling us to teach them that they were sinners and needed a personal Saviour, He was telling us to,

“…[teach] them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

“Observing all things…” means that we who are Christians are to take “dominion”, like He said in Genesis 1:26 we were created to do!  We are to rule, which is Continue reading

With the election only a month away, the candidates are fervently pushing their agenda, trying to convince us we should trust them with the future of our children.  That is what’s at stake, you know.  They promise us ‘all will be well’ if we give them our vote.  But with all the lies politicians have told us throughout our lives, why should we even bother to vote?  Well, the last two generations, many have decided not to.  We now think we’ve had a good voter turnout if 50% of those registered to vote get to the polls.  Not to mention the huge numbers who haven’t cared enough to even register.  How sad!

Why has this happened?  Since the 1920s most of our universities have been teaching that there is no God and life is all about us, and our pleasure.  Without knowing that the God of the Bible created us in an instant of time, we have no association with Him, which means we have no reason for self-worth, or for committing our lives to worthwhile tasks.  We simply “live for the weekend” as many put it.

The Church - Key to a Strong Republic 1Many people wonder why America is going downhill morally. Why is there so much drug use? Why are the gangs with all their violence growing so rapidly? Why is homosexuality capturing so many of our young people? Why do so many people refuse to marry, and instead just “live” with someone? Wrong living comes from wrong thinking; and wrong thinking comes from wrong listening!

The reason for these wrong ideas was pointed out in a Barna Research Group survey taken some years ago in Kentucky. The survey revealed that, while 82% of Kentuckians said they were Christians, over a third of those surveyed said they only attended church once every six months. This poor church attendance mocks the Scriptural command to,

“Not [forsake] the assembling of ourselves together…” (Hebrews 10:25)

But perhaps you’re thinking, “What difference does it make how often someone goes to church?” It makes a lot of difference! It makes a lot of difference to an individual, a family, and a community. So many people, who say they are believers in Jesus Christ as their Master and Savior, seem to be so hesitant about participating in government.  Nearly half of them are not even registered to vote!  I believe this reveals a much deeper problem than just avoiding government involvement.  It shows a lack of understanding (or you might say ignorance!) of what the Bible says of the position believers have in Christ.

While in my twenties, I was struggling with my walk with Christ.  Some days I’d be mostly obedient.  Some days I’d be mostly disobedient!  I was told by many that this was the normal Christian life; that there would always be a struggle with the flesh and only when we arrived in Heaven would we ever have victory in this warfare.  But I kept coming across passages in the Bible like,

“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1st Corinthians 15:57)

and in John 10:10, Jesus said,

“I am come that you might have life…and have it more abundantly.”

As America’s Founding Fathers were growing up as children one of the greatest revivals in all of history was occurring.  It would come to be called “The Great Awakening” as the Holy Spirit of God awakened Americans to the faith their Pilgrim ancestors had known so well.  The Bible became the standard once again for morals as well as manners.  They would grow up with the view of God and the view of man which the Bible revealed.  The Ten Commandments would set the boundaries for what was right and wrong in their generation.  The Biblical structure for education, business, and government would become their quest in building their society.  Their view of God was not the “teddy bear” god we’ve tried to shaped Him into in our day; rather, it was the Biblical revelation of Him as the awesome Creator and Ruler of all that is.  Because He was our Maker and Redeemer (in Christ) He was the One Who would be our Judge.

Thus, our current view of ourselves as being the focus of life was not their view.  They believed what the Bible teaches about man:

From my earliest days of knowing Jesus Christ through the new birth, I remember being taught that Christians should, quote, “obey the law of the land.” Romans 13:1 was used to support this teaching. It states,

“Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.”

The reasoning ran like this: Since God allowed the current civil government to exist, we, as Christians, should submit to it. Later I would learn that there’s just enough truth in that idea to be dangerous!!

He did it to control the “sin-root” in man so that one man could not take away another man’s rights of “life, liberty, or property”. And all citizens, including Christians, are to obey law that is designed to protect those rights. That part of the teaching was right. But the implication that all laws do protect God-given rights was the part that was bad wrong! Wicked government servants, like Pharaoh or Nebuchadnezzar, can make bad laws. In that case Christians are not obligated to obey those laws! If we submit to bad law, all liberty will quickly be destroyed!

The Bible says, “Remember those who led you…” (Hebrews 13:7) Yet, in America we’ve forgotten what those who founded this nation were like. We no longer know how they thought or what they did. Someone has truthfully described us as having “national amnesia”.

John Adams: Example of Founders’ Thinking 1The great danger in a nation forgetting its past is that they will lose the foundational ideas that made that nation great. We’re missing out on the inspiration provided by the stories of our ancestors who did amazing things to birth, grow, and protect America. Worse still, we’re missing the interventions by God Himself so that we no longer credit Him with America’s existence. Thus we lose the very Strength Who has brought the good to us which we now enjoy.

A renowned minister, A.W. Foljambe, spoke great wisdom when he said in 1876:

“The more thoroughly a nation deals with its history, the more decidedly will it recognize and own an over-ruling Providence [in it], and the more religious a nation [it will] become; while the more superficially it deals with its history, seeing only secondary causes and human agencies, the more irreligious will it be.”

When the Pilgrims came here in 1620, they had learned some things that recent generations have had stolen from them. For instance, they had come to understand that the basis of the government is covenant. No state can exist very long if its citizens are not in covenant with each other.

The word covenant is defined as “a meeting or agreement of minds”. The minds of a people living under a particular government must be in agreement on the basics of life if they are to be able to walk together throughout the generations.

They must agree about Who God is, and who He says they are, and what His plan for them is, both as individuals and a nation. Without this agreement, education, commerce, and government just become Continue reading

Property Rights- Worth Dying For 1Sam Adams, the man most responsible for the Declaration of Independence, pointed out the importance of defending our God-given rights when he stated,

“Among the natural rights of the Colonists are these: First, a right to life; Secondly, to liberty; Thirdly, to property; together with the right to support and defend them in the best manner they can…The supreme power cannot justly take from any man any part of his property, without his consent in person or by his representative.”

Let’s look carefully at one of these liberties the King had stolen and consider what’s happening to us today.  Let’s look at what they called ‘property rights’.

The right to own property you’re willing to work for is God-given, not government-granted.  Therefore it is a stewardship from God that He expects us to protect and pass on to our children.  No one has a right to take your property without you agreeing to it.  But let’s consider one of the sneaky ways your property is being stolen from you.
