In my lifetime, there’s never been so much talk among the people of this region about the way government is taking away our liberties, especially the national government. People who really understand, and there aren’t many of them at this point, are deeply grieved and praying earnestly for God to intervene. Many more people are just very afraid of the national government being out of the control of the people. They feel it’s becoming a dictatorial government that is intruding into their lives more and more. They fear for what life in America will be like for their children and grandchildren. The latter group has few answers, but they have a whole lot of questions!

Are there answers? There most certainly are answers to what government should be like, and they are found where the answers to all questions are found: In the Bible!

The Bible tells the story of Nehemiah, the civil leader who rebuilt Jerusalem after the Jews had been captive many years in Persia. In a time when the enemies of God had been trying to discourage the Jews from finishing the work God had called them to, Nehemiah exhorted them:

“…Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and [awesome], and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.” (Nehemiah 4:14)

The spiritual and natural enemies of the Gospel of the Kingdom of Christ have been trying for a hundred years to discourage Americans from knowing their history. They knew if they could disconnect us from our past, they could steal from us the reason God birthed this nation; which was to be a vessel of liberty by which to take that Gospel to the world. With the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus we naturally think of Christ’s redemption for us personally:  How His shed blood washes away our sin and guilt, and how His resurrected life makes possible that we can actually be what He created us to be.  The wonder of this cannot be fully described, but it can be fully experienced!

However, as we mature in Christ once we’ve received Him as our Lord, His life within us desires to flow in an outwardly direction.  And if we allow Him to do that to its farthest extent, His resurrected life will shape the institutions of the culture so that those institutions will become vessels through which His truth can flow to the next generation.  The institution of civil government will then protect, by law, the right of the truth of Christ’s kingdom to flow to the next generation.  America’s Founders understood that this was civil government’s responsibility.  They never envisioned the government being hostile to the church.  Any honest individual who researches their writings will reach that conclusion.

Founding Father and Sixth President, John Quincy Adams, made plain the connection between Christianity and our nation’s liberties when he stated:
